STD Testing Q & A

When should I be tested for STDs?

You should be tested for STDs before you engage in any sexual activity with a new partner. Often, STDs don’t cause any symptoms, so it’s difficult to know when you’re putting your new partner at risk until you’ve been tested yourself. At Brandon Riverview Medical Associates, the team provides quick and confidential STD testing so you can get peace of mind or appropriate treated if you need it.

What are the symptoms of STDs?

Not all STDs cause symptoms, though it’s possible to notice signs of certain STDs, like:

Bacterial vaginosis (BV)

BV is the most common type of infection among women between the ages of 15-44. It causes thin white or gray vaginal discharge, pain, itching, and burning in the vagina, a strong fishy odor, and burning when urinating.

Chlamydia

Chlamydia can affect men and women and may lead to infertility if not treated. Women with chlamydia may notice abnormal vaginal discharge or a burning sensation when urinating. Men with chlamydia may notice a discharge from their penis, a burning sensation when urinating, and pain and swelling in one or both testicles.

Genital herpes

Genital herpes causes sores or raised, red bumps around the genitals that can be mistaken for an ingrown hair or pimple. If you’ve had oral, vaginal, or anal sex, you may be at risk and need testing.

HIV/AIDS

HIV doesn’t cause any symptoms, though it can compromise your immune system and lead to the development of AIDS over time.

Human papillomavirus (HPV)

HPV is the leading cause of cervical cancer. Both men and women can be carriers. While it has no symptoms, it causes an abnormal Pap smear in women.

If you’re concerned about your risk of developing an STD, discuss your concerns with your provider and learn about ways you can reduce your risk.

What is involved in an STD test?

=Different types of STD tests are available for you at Brandon Riverview Medical Associates. Some tests involve taking a tissue sample, either from your vagina, penis, or rectum, for testing. Other tests require a sample of blood taken from your arm.

Testing is quick and confidential. If you find out you have an STD, the team provides appropriate treatment such as prescription medications and lifestyle recommendations to resolve your infection and relieve your symptoms.
